Caminando Fronteras has reported that over 10,000 migrants have died trying to reach Spain in 2024, marking the highest fatalities recorded since 2007.
The report highlights an alarming rise of 58% in fatalities compared to previous year. It stated that flimsy boats and dangerous routes greatly contribute to this tragedy.
Helena Maleno emphasized that over 10,400 missing or dead in a year represents a profound failure of existing rescue and protection systems, calling it an unacceptable tragedy.
With the majority of deaths occurring along the perilous Atlantic route, the report indicates that migrants often suffer violence and extreme conditions prior to their dangerous journeys.
