Fethullah Gulen, a U.S.-based Islamic cleric, died in his eighties, after leading a global social movement, amid controversies surrounding a failed coup in Turkey.
Gulen, once an ally of Turkey's President Erdogan, became a target of his regime, accused of orchestrating the 2016 coup attempt, which resulted in 251 deaths.
Living in self-exile in Pennsylvania, Gulen espoused a philosophy of Sufism intertwined with democracy and education, influencing millions globally.
While Gulen's death was confirmed by various sources, he long denied charges of coup involvement, with many of his supporters viewing the accusations as politically driven.
