At the Munich Security Conference, tensions rose after a significant call between Trump and Putin, highlighting fears in Europe of being sidelined regarding Ukraine discussions. German President Steinmeier urged US Vice President JD Vance to engage Europe in decisions about US troop presence, while Ursula von der Leyen emphasized Europe’s commitment to increased defense spending. She articulated that failure in Ukraine would pose risks not just to Europe but also to the US's strategic interests, asserting that global observers are watching the West's resolve and response to authoritarian aggression.
A failed Ukraine would weaken Europe, but it would also weaken the United States. It would intensify the challenges in the Indo-Pacific and threaten our shared interests.
Europe must and will spend significantly more on defense, and expand its military capabilities, ensuring that a strong Europe is also good for the US.
