EU summit: Leaders to address wars, US tariffs, migration DW 06/26/2025
Briefly

The EU summit today at 11 am CET will focus on critical discussions, including an 18th round of sanctions against Russia amid the ongoing war in Ukraine, where President Zelenskyy will join virtually. Leaders will contemplate the maintenance of a price cap on Russian oil, as energy price concerns loom. Additionally, trade relations with the US are on the agenda, with preferences leaning toward a swift agreement. The humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the nuclear negotiations with Iran also feature prominently, alongside discussions on European security and migration.
"We will address several issues that must be tackled together to advance our common ambitions: to build a more competitive, safer and more autonomous Europe for our citizens, and to ensure that the European Union can be an effective, predictable and reliable global actor," Antonio Costa, President of the European Council, said in a statement.
European leaders are expected to inform the European Commission if they want a quick trade deal with Washington, which would mean the US getting better terms, or escalate the dispute for better options.
