The nationalist-dominated government coalition led by Mickoski includes the Albanian alliance VLEN and the liberal party ZNAM. Mickoski's VMRO-DPMNE party came to power after years in opposition, focusing on addressing voter discontent over slow development, weak economy, corruption, and delays in EU integration.
Mickoski and President Davkova have both stirred controversy by referring to the country as Macedonia, despite the agreement with Greece in 2019 to change the name to North Macedonia to resolve a longstanding dispute.
