Sweden to cut monthly public transport tickets by 50% in all regions
Sweden will halve the price of monthly public transport tickets from July 1 through December 31. The measure is funded by a multibillion-kronor subsidy paid to regions, with 6.5 billion kronor earmarked for the scheme. The government links the policy to easing economic pressure during a complicated period involving security and rising costs. Higher petrol and diesel prices driven by the war in Iran have increased fuel costs, and earlier plans include cuts to fuel duties. The government says encouraging public transport use reduces pressure on fuel consumption. The subsidy is intended to lower prices and is temporary, as part of a broader 17.5 billion kronor crisis package that also includes support for agriculture and domestic air travel.
"Sweden is halving the price of monthly public transport tickets from July 1st until the end of the year, funded by a multibillion-kronor subsidy paid out to the regions. "We are trying to guide the Swedish public through what is a rather complicated time, both in terms of security and the economy," Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson told a joint press conference alongside the Christian Democrats, Liberals and Sweden Democrats."
"The government said the new subsidised public transport would slash monthly pass prices by 50 percent from July 1st to December 31st. A total of 6.5 billion kronor has been earmarked for the scheme. "Encouraging public transport use also reduces the pressure on fuel consumption in Sweden," Kristersson said."
"The subsidy is reportedly specifically aimed to reduce prices and is not designed to accommodate any potential increase in traffic resulting from the energy crisis. In total, the government's crisis package amounts to 17.5 billion kronor. It also includes support for agriculture and domestic air travel. All measures are temporary."
