The EU signals willingness to fast-track trade talks with the US before a 50% tariff returns in July

The European Union is expediting trade negotiations with the United States to prevent a potential trade war sparked by President Trump's tariff threats. Following a phone call between Trump and EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, the EU expressed a commitment to fast-track discussions. Trump's criticism of the EU's slow pace of negotiations led to threats of a 50% tariff, which has now been postponed. Both parties are actively working to de-escalate tensions as complex negotiations continue on crucial trade matters.
"They agreed both to fast-track the trade negotiations and to stay in close contact," said Paula Pinho, a spokeswoman for the European Commission.
"We are talking about, of course, the world's single largest and closest trading relations, so these negotiations are complex," added Pinho.
Trump warned he would slap a 50% tariff on EU goods and described trade negotiations as 'going nowhere.'
Trump said it was 'my privilege' to delay the planned tariff hike on European goods by over a month.
