DOJ move against Chrome renews calls for Google to sell Android
Briefly

Renewed calls for Google to divest its Chrome browser have emerged alongside demands for the company to also sell its Android operating system. A Murena executive labeled the breakup as essential to disrupt Google's dominance. This comes on the heels of a new DOJ court filing proposing the sale of Chrome to promote competition. While the DOJ plans to enforce changes in Android's business practices first, they may consider divestment if those measures are ineffective, highlighting ongoing concerns over consumer choice and market control.
The appeal follows a Friday court filing from the US Department of Justice (DOJ). The filing reaffirmed a proposal for Google to divest its Chrome browser and sell it to a competitor.
As a data privacy advocate, I welcome the DOJ's decision forcing Google to sell Chrome, however this should only be the start. I want to see Google sell the Android operating system.
Through its sheer size and unrestricted power, Google has robbed consumers and businesses of a fundamental promise owed to the public - their right to choose among competing services.
Rik Viergever, COO at Murena, suggests that breaking up Google's businesses is the only way to end the company's cycle of domination and ease its stranglehold.
