Taoiseach Micheál Martin expressed his disappointment over former President Trump’s proposed 50% tariffs on EU products unless manufactured in the US, deeming the decision 'enormously disappointing.' He criticized the impact of tariffs on global trade and stated that such measures harm everyone involved, including businesses and consumers. The Taoiseach welcomed a pause in tariff discussions until July to allow negotiations. He emphasized that a negotiated outcome is the ideal scenario while acknowledging the EU's efforts to engage in good faith.
The European Union, which was formed for the primary purpose of taking advantage of the United States on TRADE, has been very difficult to deal with.
I have always been clear in my view that tariffs are damaging to all sides - those imposing them, those on the receiving end and, most importantly, to businesses and consumers.
These tariffs will push prices up and also damage global trade, a negotiated outcome is the best possible result for both sides.
I welcomed the pause in tariffs until early July to allow for continued negotiations between the EU and the US.
