Microsoft has pushed back against claims that its cancellation and deferment of at least 2GW of datacentre projects in the US and Europe indicates a fraying relationship with OpenAI. Analyst TD Cowen suggested the decision was linked to Microsoft's refusal to support OpenAI's incremental training workloads. However, Microsoft maintains that it is in a strong partnership with OpenAI, emphasizing significant investments in its infrastructure that position the company to meet customer demand. Changes to the exclusivity agreement allow OpenAI flexibility in its capacity needs with other partners.
Last year alone, we added more capacity than any prior year in history. While we may strategically pace or adjust our infrastructure in some areas, we will continue to grow strongly.
The changes to the exclusivity on new capacity mean that Microsoft has a right of first refusal for hosting OpenAI workloads, but OpenAI can also build its own capacity with other partners.
