In the wake of the 2011 tsunami in Japan, Sashiko Gals emerged as a project to assist victims, led by Moonshot, a design-focused company tackling social issues. Named after a traditional stitching technique, the initiative employs 15 workers to upcycle secondhand sneakers into bespoke footwear that can take two weeks to complete and costs approximately $1,332 a pair. Since its launch in early 2024, Sashiko Gals has produced 100 pairs of unique sneakers, gaining a waitlist so long that they now only accept new orders twice yearly. The project blends craftsmanship and community support, becoming a form of wearable art.
The one-of-a-kind footwear can take as long as two weeks to create, and cost 200,000 yen, or $1,332, a pair.
Since Sashiko Gals introduced its work in early 2024, the group has completed 100 pairs of sneakers, sold through stores in Tokyo that stock Kuon.
