In 'The Shrouds,' Vincent Cassel portrays Karsh, a man who cannot move on after losing his wife, Becca, to cancer. Four years post-loss, he invents a burial shroud technology to observe her decaying body in the grave. His grief is personified through dreamlike nightmares where he interacts with Becca's increasingly disfigured spectral presence, showcasing the emotional turmoil and obsession stemming from loss. Director David Cronenberg emphasizes that while Becca is gone, Karsh's madness roots from her lingering memory, turning grief into a relentless nightmare.
When they lowered my wife, Becca, into the coffin, I had an intense urge to get into the box with her.
Grief can be a waking nightmare. There are moments which I think are quite clearly sort of dream sequences in the movie...his unconscious is bringing him the images of himself and his wife.
