Review | 'Jane Austen Wrecked My Life': Modern love with a Regency twist
Briefly

'Jane Austen Wrecked My Life' cleverly mixes modern elements with a light-hearted homage to Austen's world, following Agathe, an aspiring writer working in a Paris bookstore. As she navigates her passion for writing and complicated feelings for her friend Félix, a trip to a Jane Austen Residency introduces her to Oliver, a classic romantic lead, further complicating her life. The film is filled with visual charm and celebrates the joys and pains of love, echoed by its literary inspirations and beautiful settings.
That recently aired "Masterpiece Theatre" series centered on Jane Austen's sister, Cassandra, who famously burned some of the famous author's letters, leading to centuries of mystery and conjecture.
Set in the present day, this genteel bonbon stars Camille Rutherford as Agathe, a would-be writer working as a clerk in Paris's storied Shakespeare and Co. bookstore.
Agathe has been working on a novel at the expense of her love life; when she winds up snuggling with her best friend and co-worker Félix, most filmgoers will see the friends-into-lovers romance coming down the Champs-Élysées.
Piani arranges her players against an appealing backdrop of flowers, fabrics, candles and pianos, from which strains of Schubert can be heard.
