He grew up in a working-class Santa Monica neighborhood during the Great Depression and later studied fine arts in Europe, splitting time between Paris and Florence. A longtime illustrator, he produced and sold sketches in Paris and showed drawings at the 2011 Arternativelight exhibition in Monaco. His breakthrough came with Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1970). He collaborated with Sydney Pollack, directed Ordinary People (1980), and received an Honorary César in 2019.
