TIFF runs Sept. 4–14 and features nearly 300 new films during its 50th year. Higher-tier TIFF members received early ticket access starting Aug. 15, with public sales opening 10 days later. Some buyers secure tickets by repeatedly refreshing Ticketmaster, which yielded extra seats when an unannounced screening was added. Online communities on Facebook and Reddit facilitate ticket trades and resales, though scams and scalpers pose risks. Standing in rush lines can yield last-minute tickets when empty seats appear. Longtime attendees combine membership advantages, online monitoring and rush-line persistence to maximize chances of obtaining seats.
The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) is two days away and the battle for the remaining tickets is officially on. There will be nearly 300 new features at the festival's 50th year, when movie-lovers and superstars will fill theatres from Sept. 4 to 14. TIFF members especially those on the higher tiers got early ticket access, starting Aug. 15, while sales opened to the public 10 days later.
"It really was just dumb luck," the University of Toronto graduate student told CBC Toronto. "The festival, without announcing it, just added another screening. So pretty much an entire theatre full of tickets just dropped all of a sudden, and I just happened to be on the page." Harris also recommended joining online pages on Facebook and Reddit, where people trade tickets or often re-sell them for market value. But he warns, those communities are not always filled with sunshine and buttered popcorn.
