Frozen beef patties provide a convenient solution for quick midweek meals, unexpected company, or when fresh meat is unavailable, and are handy to keep in the freezer. Eleven brands were selected from multiple stores and taste-tested, with evaluations focusing on chew, taste, and overall satisfaction. Results showed wide variation in quality, from acceptable convenience to disappointing levels of processing and seasoning. The Flanders homestyle patties contained multiple added ingredients such as soy flour and dextrose, produced a strong seasoning aroma, and exhibited a processed texture compared to crab or salmon cakes.
But frozen beef patties deserve a second look - they can be a convenient lifesaver for quick midweek meals, unexpected company, or those times when you can't get to the store but really, really want a burger. They're great to have on hand in your freezer so you can grab one at any time. But trying to decide which ones to buy might have you reaching for the cheapest, most obvious choice at the store.
The "homestyle patties" label should have tipped me off to the laundry list of ingredients, but I wasn't ready for something claiming to be a "classic beef burger" to be anything but. The overpowering seasoning smell hit me right away. That's okay, though I prefer to season my own burgers versus relying on mystery spices. With the addition of soy flour and dextrose, these patties are heavily processed with a texture reminiscent of crab or salmon cakes.
