California dessert empire Sprinkles Cupcakes abruptly closes all stores
"Even though I sold the company over a decade ago, I still have such a personal connection to it, and this isn't how I thought the story would go,"
"I thought Sprinkles would keep growing and be around forever. I thought it was gonna be my legacy."
"surreal."
Sprinkles Cupcakes, known for cupcake ATMs and mall kiosk locations, is expected to close all stores after a 20-year run with a final service date of Dec. 31. Founder Candace Nelson, who sold the company more than a decade ago to private equity firm KarpReilly Capital Partners, described the closures as surreal and expressed personal disappointment. The reasons for the closures remain unknown and no official company announcement had been made as of Wednesday morning. The chain operates more than 20 stores across six states and Washington, D.C., plus 25 cupcake ATMs; future plans for the ATMs and a recently announced Burlingame location are unclear.
