This Hidden Gem Pupuseria Is Bringing Fresh Food to an Atlanta Food Desert
Briefly

La Bodega pupuseria relocated to 1975 Sylvan Road SW in Sylvan Hills, occupying the former D&D Barbeque & Ribs space. The U.S. Department of Agriculture designates Sylvan Hills as a food desert, requiring residents to drive miles for groceries. Jeannette Flores-Katz and Ken Katz partnered with Invest Atlanta to open a small market within the pupuseria to bring Georgia-grown produce, eggs, pantry items, and hot or frozen pupusas to the neighborhood. The takeout window offers hot pupusas, coffee, refrescos, and juices. Frozen pupusas sell in two-packs with multiple fillings and vegan and vegetarian options. Pricing includes $8 hot pupusas and $14 for two frozen pupusas.
The kitchen smells of corn as I reheat frozen pupusas from a tiny new market in Sylvan Hills. It reminds me of home in New Delhi, eating stuffed parathas with chai for breakfast. Instead of potatoes and paneer, these pupusas are filled with chorizo and sweet plantains. It's a hidden gem, this pupuseria, and now it's feeding a neighborhood desperately facing food insecurity in Atlanta.
La Bodega pupuseria has moved from the MET in Adair Park to the southwest side at 1975 Sylvan Road SW, in the former D&D Barbeque & Ribs space. The U.S. Department of Agriculture designates the Sylvan Hills as a food desert, meaning residents have to drive for miles to get to a grocery store. Husband-and-wife duo, Jeannette Flores-Katz and Ken Katz, have partnered with Invest Atlanta to open a small market in their pupuseria to bring fresh produce to the area.
The new location's take-out window serves hot pupusas ($8 each or as a plate with salsa and curtido, a fermented cabbage relish for $12), coffee, refrescos, and juices. Frozen pupusas are sold in packs of two for $14 with stuffings like roast chicken and cheese, Caribe United Farm chorizo and cheese, and a breakfast option with bacon, egg, and cheese. Vegan and vegetarian options are also available
