The Bronx has a high ratio of bodegas to supermarkets, impacting access to fresh food options.
One of the Bay Area's buzziest new restaurants, Valley Goat, is in the middle of what feels eerily like a food desert. The upscale restaurant, tucked inside the posh Treehouse Hotel in Sunnyvale's booming tech district, is more than 3 miles from a supermarket. Most of the other places to eat nearby are fast food chains - Togo's, KFC, Burger King and McDonald's.
KC Sun Fresh lost nearly $900,000 over the last year and has received tens of millions of dollars in support since 2018, illustrating ongoing challenges in sustaining community grocery stores.
Growing up in a food desert and seeing how many lactose-intolerant Black and Brown people there are. And seeing that the fastest growing segment of plant-based eaters are Black and Brown people.
