France enforces two official sales periods each year, one in summer and one in winter. Outside those periods, discounts and special offers are strictly limited. Les soldes permit retailers to sell items below the price they paid, a rule intended to protect small independent businesses. In most of metropolitan France winter sales run from 8am on Wednesday 7 January to the evening of Tuesday 3 February, while Meurthe-et-Moselle, Meuse, Moselle and Vosges run from Friday 2 January to Thursday 29 January. Overseas territories follow different schedules. Sale items must be clearly marked and separated from non-sale items.
