France: Ex-Lafarge CEO jailed for funding Syrian jihadists
""These payments took the form of a genuine commercial partnership with the Islamic State," said presiding Judge Isabelle Prevost-Desprez."
"Lafarge had already pled guilty in a US suit to funding 'IS' and Nusra Front between 2013 and 2015 so that its Jalabiya plant could keep running."
"At the time, it was well-known that the groups were participating in torture, enslavement, and mass killings in the regions they occupied, which at times included the Lafarge plant."
A Paris court convicted Bruno Lafont and eight former Lafarge employees for financing terrorism in Syria, sentencing Lafont to six years in prison and imposing a 1.125 million euro fine on the company. The court found that Lafarge had funneled approximately 5.6 million euros to terrorist groups, including the Islamic State and Nusra Front, to maintain operations in the country. Despite the known atrocities committed by these groups, Lafarge continued its activities in Syria after the civil war began, marking a significant legal precedent in France.
