The strike reportedly has broad support among 2,200 security guards, cashiers, and researchers. Recent incidents include a gallery closed because ceiling beams threatened collapse and water damage that ruined hundreds of books and manuscripts in the Egyptian department. Lead architect Francois Chatillon admitted the building "is not in good shape." Tourists expressed disappointment at lost visits.
