During surgery, I cut off the patient's own cornea and replaced it with a new donor cornea. At that moment, the patient started vomiting... Everything inside of the eye can now become outside of the eye. I had to grab the new cornea and start stitching as fast as I could on a patient actively throwing up. It turned out okay but not great. Don't lie about eating breakfast before surgery, folks.
I came into work one morning to a patient that was admitted the night before, intubated and sedated. Long story short, he was extubated that same shift and was completely alert and oriented. I remember thinking about how quickly things can change in a critical care setting, emphasizing the importance of being prepared for anything.
