President Donald Trump's recent executive order dismantled the Voice of America, shutting down an institution that had been broadcasting for 83 years. This move eliminated more than 1,300 jobs within the US Agency for Global Media and ceased operations that began during World War II for anti-propaganda efforts. In contrast, state-funded broadcasters like Russia's RT and China's CCTV continue their operations successfully. Following the shutdown, Russian and Chinese media celebrated the decision, showcasing a growing gap between the US and these nations in terms of media freedom and influence.
Russian and Chinese state-run media welcomed Trump's move last week, with the Global Times calling VOA a "lie factory," while RT editor in chief Margarita Simonyan praised Trump's "awesome decision."
The order eliminated seven government entities not mandated by law, including VOA's parent, the US Agency for Global Media, placing more than 1,300 journalists on leave.
