Flight costs from France to rise as government more than doubles air tax
Briefly

Next month, France will significantly increase its solidarity tax on airline tickets, aiming to raise nearly 1 billion euros yearly for fiscal and ecological reasons. Critics, including Air France's CEO, argue that this hike could undermine France's global competitiveness. The tax will see sharp increases for various flight classes, with Air France estimating a 100m euro hit. This move is part of a broader budget plan to tackle France's deficit, which faced swift parliamentary approval. Flights to Corsica and overseas territories will remain exempt from the tax increase.
Amelie de Montchalin, the minister for public accounts, stated that the tax increase is a measure of fiscal and ecological justice, targeting the wealthiest travelers.
Benjamin Smith, the director general of Air France-KLM, called the tax increase irresponsible and described it as a tax to access France, adding that air transport in France is already heavily taxed.
