France and Poland are set to sign a significant friendship and cooperation treaty on Friday, signaling a deepening alliance between two key EU nations as they bolster support for Ukraine amid Russian aggression. The treaty, described by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk as a "game-changer," ensures mutual assistance in the face of threats. With a more assertive Poland under Tusk's leadership, the countries are aligning strategically, especially in defense and energy cooperation, while also adapting to the evolving geopolitical landscape that requires European nations to ensure their own security more proactively.
"This treaty will lift the Franco-Polish partnership to a high level of ambition in strategic areas for our two countries and for Europe, particularly defence and energy," said the French presidency.
Tusk described the treaty as a "game-changer" and "historic", emphasizing its importance by stating: "It is a treaty in which we assure each other of mutual assistance in the event of a threat or aggression."
Pierre Buhler, former French ambassador to Poland, noted that France has realized that "Poland is an essential partner in a high-risk environment," reflecting a shift in strategic alliances.
Poland is asserting: 'Yes, we are taking responsibility for ourselves by entering into an alliance with the strongest country in continental Europe.'
