The UK Home Office is extending the one in, one out scheme aimed at deterring small boat Channel crossings and disrupting people-smuggling gangs. Under the deal between the UK prime minister and the French president, an asylum seeker arriving in the UK by small boat is forcibly returned to France in exchange for another person in France who has not attempted the crossing and is brought to the UK legally. The pilot period was due to end on 11 June, but it has been extended until 1 October. Returns to France and arrivals to the UK under the scheme have continued, while overall crossings have fallen by about a third, partly due to weather. Asylum seekers expressed dismay, saying the extension will not stop refugees from coming and that detention causes suffering.
