More than 100,000 people claimed asylum in the UK last year, slightly down on the year before but still significantly higher than pre-pandemic levels, official figures show. Government figures published on Thursday revealed that 100,625 people applied for asylum in 2025, down 4 per cent on 2024. This is more than double the number arriving in the pre-pandemic year 2019, when 45,537 people claimed sanctuary.
With these confirmed arrivals on Wednesday, the 2026 total for crossings will exceed 2,000, surpassing numbers recorded at the same point in 2024 and 2025. This surge in crossings is likely to intensify political pressure on the Government to take decisive action regarding border control and asylum processing.

It is the latest of several trials in France targeting smugglers, but one of the first to target a group using so-called "taxi boats", a technique used since 2023 in which they taxi along the shore in dinghies to pick up migrants after they have already waded into the water. France and Britain have vowed to crack down on people smugglers who heap migrants on flimsy vessels to make the dangerous crossing in exchange for thousands of dollars.
An NGO working with refugees has told the Guardian it could launch a legal challenge because the tactic could force desperate people to take more dangerous journeys. In July, there was a flurry of French police interventions near French beaches to stop the boats with footage recorded by the BBC of a boat being punctured in shallow water while carrying asylum seekers. But the interventions were halted in early August following objections from the French police officers' union.
The UK sanctioned Balkans-based gangs and financiers who it said facilitated small boat crossings across the English Channel. The UK Foreign Office said the sanctions, which include asset freezes and travel bans, targeted criminal gangs involved in "illegal migration to the UK." The sanctions came as British Prime Minister Keir Starmer hosted European leaders at a Western Balkans summit to discuss migration and economy.
