Drones Will Do Some Schlepping for Sherpas on Mount Everest
Briefly

The upcoming climbing season on Mount Everest will see drone technology tested to assist Sherpas by transporting loads quickly and safely. Drones can carry items weighing up to 35 pounds, drastically reducing transit time from seven hours to just 15 minutes between base camp and Camp I. This innovation aims to alleviate the physical burden on Sherpas while also minimizing risks associated with climate change and hazardous conditions. A pilot test could encourage expedition agencies to invest in drones, potentially lowering operational costs in the long run.
When the main climbing season begins next month on Mount Everest, expedition companies will test drones that can ferry loads as heavy as 35 pounds in the high altitudes.
By lightening the Sherpas' burdens, drone operators hope that the chances of fatal accidents—which have risen as climate change has accelerated snowmelt—can now be reduced.
