Steam is overhauling its official game tagging system on the storefront after years without major changes. The update adds 17 new tags, removes 28 old tags, and merges or updates several existing ones. The goal is to help players identify games that match their interests and to improve Steam’s recommendation accuracy. The change includes removing tags such as “NSFW” and adding new official tags such as “Bullet Heaven” for Vampire Survivors-like games. It also introduces tags covering activities and themes like desktop companion games, organizing and cleaning, decorating, wuxia and xianxia martial arts fantasy, falling blocks puzzle play, espionage, samurai, and zoo management.
"Today we've made some changes to the set of official store tags available on Steam, adding 17 new tags, removing 28, and merging/updating a handful of others. These changes are made with the goal of helping players identify the games that best fit their interests, and helping Steam generate appropriate recommendations."
"Each year, we typically add a few new tags based on community feedback, but it has been a while since we last did so (Most recently in 2024 when we added Dice, Dwarf, Boomer Shooter, and Elf tags). In the time since, we've built up a list of tags to add, remove, and update."
""NSFW" is out, for example, while "Bullet Heaven" has been made the official tag for Vampire Survivors-likes. Bullet Heaven - The opposite of Bullet Hell; Focus on upgrades while automatically attacking hordes of enemies"
