MoviePass, under CEO Stacy Spikes, is launching Mogul, a fantasy game aimed at movie aficionados where users predict upcoming film performances. Inspired by the success of fantasy sports, this game enables users to build leagues, select actors and directors, and use a budget of digital coins to create their studios. With 400,000 people on the waitlist, Spikes expresses hopes for high engagement through tournaments and head-to-head matchups, potentially leading to monetary gaming aspects in the future. Mogul is designed to increase user interaction, likened to "Monopoly for the entertainment industry."
"Sports has really learned how to create engagement," Spikes told Business Insider. "I think we can learn something from them for the movie industry."
Spikes hopes the free-to-play game will drive audience engagement with daily and weekly tournaments, by setting a roster and playing out seasonally.
The idea for Mogul came out of MoviePass' Friday staff calls, when employees talk about what they think the top five films will be at the box office each weekend.
Spikes likened Mogul to "Monopoly for the entertainment industry."
