Authorities in Austria’s western Tyrol province will close part of the highway and surrounding roads to all transit traffic from 11:00am local time to 7:00pm to accommodate a rally. The A13 provides trans-Alpine access into Italy and connects Germany and Italy across Europe’s key corridor. The protest at Matrei am Brenner runs from 1:00pm to 4:30pm. OeAMTC warns drivers to avoid traveling through Tyrol due to extensive traffic jams. Heavy goods traffic has risen to 2.4 million vehicles using the Brenner Pass last year, up from 900,000 lorries in 1991, while Switzerland’s four transit routes carried 860,000 trucks. Protesters cite pollution, noise, and congestion as unmanageable for local communities and demand action from Brussels and Vienna.
