German defender Hummels to retire at end of season
Briefly

Mats Hummels, the distinguished German defender, has announced his retirement from professional football this summer at the age of 36. Currently contracted with Serie A club Roma, Hummels expressed a mixture of emotions over his decision, reflecting on an enriching 18-year career. He was instrumental in Germany’s 2014 World Cup win and recognized as a role model for younger defenders by current German coach Julian Nagelsmann. Hummels played significant roles in major clubs including Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund, amassing 508 matches for Dortmund and winning numerous titles before joining Roma in 2024.
I'm struggling with my emotions right now. Now comes the moment that no footballer can avoid. After 18 years and so many things that football has given me, I'm ending my career this summer.
Julian Nagelsmann hailed him as 'a benchmark at the international level and a role model for a generation of defenders'.
Hummels was part of the Germany side which won the 2014 World Cup and earned 78 caps for his country between 2010 and 2023, scoring five goals.
He joined Roma in 2024 on a free transfer and has made 18 appearances in all competitions for the Giallorossi so far this season.
