The PCK refinery in Germany has faced challenges due to a lack of Russian oil deliveries via the Druzhba pipeline, which ceased over two years ago following sanctions related to the Ukraine war. Local officials advocate for a return to Russian oil imports, citing production difficulties with alternative materials. With the recent thaw in US-Russia relations, some express optimism for political changes that could lead to renewed oil supplies. The refinery operates at reduced capacity, posing economic threats to the local workforce, and urgent solutions are sought to stabilize operations and preserve jobs.
"Many people, especially in Schwedt, see it as conceivable and desirable that oil could once again flow via the pipeline," said Hans-Joachim Hoeppner.
"If changes are happening in the relationship with Russia... then I think it is very possible that there is Russian oil," Hoeppner stated.
"Since then, the refinery in Schwedt has been drawing substitute supplies via a pipeline to Rostock, as well as small volumes through the Polish port of Gdansk and from Kazakhstan," explained the article.
"A 'solution' is urgently needed to keep the refinery running and save jobs locally," emphasized Danny Ruthenburg.
