Germany: Police shoot dead man after Euro 2024 party attack DW 06/15/2024
Briefly

A man attacked several people in the eastern German state of Saxony-Anhalt, including at a private party to mark the opening of the Euro 2024 soccer tournament. The attacker, a 27-year-old Afghan national, stabbed a young man in Wolmirstedt, with the victim later dying of his injuries.
The assailant rushed through a nearby allotment, threatening people with a 'knife-like object,' then entered the property where the football party was happening. He proceeded to stab attendees randomly, leaving three people injured, while the attack occurred shortly after the Germany vs Scotland match kicked off.
Two of the injured individuals, a 50-year-old and a 75-year-old man, sustained severe wounds, while a 56-year-old man was slightly hurt. The police later shot dead the assailant after he confronted them upon their arrival at the scene, and he ultimately succumbed to the gunshot wounds in the hospital.
Despite the tragic incident, the opening night of Euro 2024 was mostly peaceful, with the concern of a potential major attack looming before the tournament. Germany emerged victorious over Scotland in the match held at the Allianz Arena, Munich.
