Germany to close embassy in South Sudan
Briefly

Germany is temporarily shutting its embassy in Juba, South Sudan, fearing a return to civil conflict. Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock emphasized that colleague safety is paramount and attributed the country’s instability to President Salva Kiir and Vice-President Riek Machar. She urged them to cease the escalating violence and honor the existing peace agreements. Meanwhile, other nations, including Canada and the U.S., have offered mediation to preserve peace. The German government has a history of warning against travel to South Sudan due to safety concerns.
"After years of fragile peace, South Sudan is once again on the brink of civil war. We decided this week to temporarily close our embassy in Juba due to the current situation. The safety of our colleagues is the top priority," she said on X.
"It is their responsibility to put an end to the senseless violence and finally implement the peace agreement," Baerbock added.
