The Verdi trade union has announced a nationwide warning strike for public sector workers in Germany, particularly affecting hospitals, nursing homes, and emergency services. Scheduled for March 6th, the strike is part of ongoing labor disputes, following disruptions across various sectors including transportation and municipal services. Patients should expect cancellations of non-urgent operations, although emergency services will continue operating. Verdi is seeking a wage increase, better work conditions, and recognition for healthcare workers, with negotiations set for mid-March.
"Most people in this country are aware of what employees in hospitals and care facilities, in psychiatric hospitals and in the emergency services do for society every day. But public employers are lacking recognition."
Verdi is demanding a wage increase of at least €350 for all public sector employees, higher bonuses for some shifts, and three extra days off.
The next round of negotiations is scheduled for mid-March, amidst ongoing regional and nationwide strikes affecting multiple public service sectors.
Hospitals and facilities providing urgent care will maintain emergency timetables during strikes to ensure that necessary services remain unaffected.
