Starting June 6th, the revised Energy Industry Act in Germany enables consumers to switch electricity providers and have their supply switched over within 24 hours. This change, aimed at fostering market competition and protecting consumers, means that households can expect their new energy provider to start supplying energy almost immediately. Previously, switching took an average of eight to nine days. However, consumers need to plan their contract changes well in advance, as retroactive registration or deregistration is no longer permitted, which could impact service continuity.
A change to the Energy Industry Act will allow consumers in Germany to switch electricity providers and have supply switched within 24 hours starting June 6th.
The faster switch is projected to save consumers money by reducing the time they spend on a costly 'basic supply' tariff when switching providers.
Consumers must now plan energy contract changes in advance, as retroactive registration and deregistration will no longer be possible under the new rules.
