Marian Turski, who passed away at 98, was a Holocaust survivor and tireless advocate against indifference to injustice. After returning to Poland post-WWII, he devoted himself to sharing the stories of those who suffered under Nazism. Turski warned of rising antisemitism and emphasized the importance of defending human rights and democratic values. His famous exhortation, "The 11th Commandment is important: Don't be indifferent," captured his belief that inaction in the face of discrimination could lead to future atrocities akin to Auschwitz.
Auschwitz did not fall from the sky. It began with small forms of persecution of Jews. It happened; it means it can happen anywhere.
The 11th Commandment is important: Don't be indifferent. Do not be indifferent when you see historical lies. Do not be indifferent when any minority is discriminated.
If you are indifferent, before you know it another Auschwitz will come out of the blue for you or your descendants.
