Saul Luciano Lliuya, a Peruvian farmer, is set to confront German energy company RWE in court over climate change effects on his town. Lliuya claims that RWE's historical emissions contribute to glacial melting, threatening his village in Huaraz. He seeks financial help equivalent to 0.5% of the protection costs necessary to safeguard his community. His case is notable as it represents the first successful advancement of a climate-related lawsuit in Germany against a major corporation, highlighting the accountability of companies in the climate crisis.
"What I am asking is for the company to take responsibility for part of the construction costs, such as a dike in this case," Lliuya said.
"I have full confidence in these processes," said Lliuya, expressing optimism ahead of his case against RWE.
RWE stated it does not understand why it is being singled out, noting its plans for carbon neutrality by 2040.
The upcoming hearing represents a chance to set a significant precedent for climate-related lawsuits against major polluters.
