Two British nationals have been arrested in Iran and were allowed to meet UK ambassador Hugo Shorter. Photographs of the meeting were published by state media, showing the envoy alongside Kerman's prosecutor and authorities. The arrests coincide with heightened diplomatic tensions due to economic sanctions imposed by the US on Iran, which are complicating potential negotiations regarding the nuclear program. Meanwhile, Iran has recently undertaken a series of actions including securing the release of an Iranian exporter sought by the US, demonstrating its geopolitical maneuvers.
The meeting on Wednesday was held in the presence of Kerman prosecutor Mehdi Bakhshi and Kerman governor's deputy for security and law enforcement, Rahman Jalal.
The UK Foreign Office did not issue a statement about the development, which came just as the new Iranian ambassador to the UK was due to arrive.
Iran secured the Italian release of an Iranian exporter, Mohammad Abedini, wanted by the US for allegedly supplying goods used in a drone attack on US soldiers.
After Cecilia Sala had spent three weeks in an Iranian jail, the government of Georgia Meloni released Abedini, leading to Sala's release.
