In January 1824, a ship named Argus arrived at the port of Rio de Janeiro with around 280 people on board. The new arrivals settled in the states of Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul, and on July 25, 1824, established the city of Sao Leopoldo, named after the Brazilian Emperor's Austrian wife Leopoldine.
Emperor Dom Pedro I of Brazil recruited German immigrants not only for goodwill but also as potential settlers and to prepare them to stand against Brazil's enemies if needed. The decision was strategic given the impending end of slavery in Brazil and the need for new workers.
