Austria's coalition government negotiations are historically lengthy, nearing five months, as three major centrist parties approach a potential agreement. The conservative Austria's People's Party (OVP), the Social Democrats (SPO), and liberal Neos aim to form a coalition, excluding the far-right Freedom Party (FPO), which secured nearly 29% of votes in September's election. OVP leader Christian Stocker believes consensus is achievable, while FPO's Herbert Kickl expressed regret over the collapse of prior coalition talks. The political landscape has shifted markedly, requiring careful negotiations among centrist factions.
I do not take this step without regret. There appeared to be no point in trying to negotiate with the centre-left Social Democrats, the only other party with which the Freedom Party could reach a parliamentary agreement.
I am very confident that in the common ground that we have found, we will manage to finalise a coalition government agreement.
