Inside the sketchbook of Sergio Mancinelli: the watercolour world of a Netflix and Apple background artist revealed
Briefly

Sergio Mancinelli, an Italian character designer, draws inspiration from childhood experiences with animation, fantasy illustrations, and family influences. Known for his work on Netflix's Klaus and Oscar-winning short The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse, Sergio reflects on how significant films like Disney’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame shaped his passion for storytelling through drawing. He emphasizes ongoing creativity, regularly using sketchbooks, and exploring diverse techniques in both traditional and digital mediums as reflections of his artistic evolution.
As a child, I was fond of different things, from the most classic fantasy illustration to Magic: The Gathering. I loved watching movies, especially The Lord of the Rings.
When I was very young I broke my femur, and I remember my mother brought me two random VHS [tapes]... They became impressed in my mind and made me realize the potential of drawing.
I've never stopped drawing on paper, whether in sketchbooks or loose sheets. I like to change techniques and try a little bit of everything.
Drawing was the common thread of all these passions and I started studying it mostly for fun, influenced by my family who were a great source of motivation.
