His son, Daniel McFarlane, was convicted in 2022 of two rapes and sentenced to five years after a covert recording helped secure the conviction. Police arrested and charged the GP with communications offences in August. Rape Crisis Scotland has complained twice to the General Medical Council and its chief executive asked for an urgent investigation, citing distress to Ms Wilson. Dr McFarlane remains able to see patients in NHS Highland and has not yet appeared in court.
