Officials announced that harmful chemicals in sewage sludge used as fertilizer may significantly raise cancer risk for people consuming contaminated milk, beef, and other products.
The EPA now warns that the solids from sewage treatment, often spread on pastures, commonly contain toxic PFAS that standard treatment processes cannot effectively remove.
People consuming food products from animals raised on PFAS-contaminated land, or drinking PFAS-laden water, are at a greater risk of developing serious health issues.
While the EPA has imposed limits on certain metals in sewage sludge, it notably does not regulate PFAS, which poses long-term health risks to consumers.
