A recent study highlights the dangers of consuming food from plastic containers, especially when heated. Conducted in two segments, it first surveyed 3,000 individuals about their plastic exposure and heart disease, revealing a 13% increased risk of congestive heart failure linked to higher plastic usage. The second part involved feeding rats boiled water from plastic containers, which altered their gut health and damaged heart tissue, regardless of boiling duration. These findings raise alarms about the effects of plastic leaching on human and animal health, particularly related to inflammation and heart injury.
The results indicated that ingestion of these leachates altered the intestinal microenvironment, affected gut microbiota composition, and modified gut microbiota metabolites, particularly those linked to inflammation and oxidative stress.
Researchers found a strong correlation between people who had more exposure to plastic, such as eating out of plastic containers, and a risk for developing congestive heart failure.
