Hospital responds after multiple nurses in same unit report having brain tumors
Briefly

Multiple nurses at Massachusetts General Brigham's Newton-Wellesley Hospital have developed non-cancerous brain tumors, leading to an internal investigation by both the hospital and the nurses' union. While the hospital completed environmental testing and claimed no risks were present, union representatives criticized the comprehensiveness of these tests. A total of five nurses were diagnosed with three types of brain tumors, prompting increased scrutiny of potential environmental factors affecting hospital staff. The investigation's focus primarily revolved around the maternity unit, although additional health reports from other hospital areas were also mentioned.
"The hospital cannot make this issue go away by attempting to provide a predetermined conclusion," said the nurses union, which is launching their own investigation.
The Massachusetts Nurses Association said it asked the hospital to investigate in December. The union said the reports are focused on the maternity unit at the hospital, but there are reports from other areas as well.
"Based on these results, we can confidently reassure our dedicated team members at Mass General Brigham/Newton-Wellesley Hospital... that there is no environmental risk at our facility," the statement read.
"Our investigation found no environmental risks which could be linked to the development of a brain tumor," Jonathan Sonis, associate chief medical officer, stated.
