NYC nurses ready for Monday morning strike as contract talks stall
"Nancy Hagans, RN, president of NYSNA, said on Jan. 11 that NYSNA nurses at Mount Sinai Hospital locations will strike at 6 a.m. on Jan. 12, followed by Montefiore and NewYork-Presbyterian hospitals at 7 a.m. Monday. Hagans said nurses will not walk out if management at the three locations meets the nurses' demands on improving workplace safety and staffing standardskey items that have been sticking points throughout the negotiation process."
"Although we are willing to negotiate on salary, they have failed to deliver meaningful counterproposals and are still threatening healthcare cuts for frontline nurses, she said, adding that NYSNA members are open to negotiating more until the clock strikes 6 a.m. Strike talks began last year with nurses from 12 private hospitals negotiating for improvements and wage increases. Mutual agreements have already been met at several of those medical centers, Hagans said, leaving Mount Sinai, Montefiore, and NewYork-Presbyterian in waiting."
More than 14,000 private-sector nurses at major New York City hospitals are poised to begin a strike Monday morning unless management reaches agreements on key demands. NYSNA President Nancy Hagans said nurses at Mount Sinai will strike at 6 a.m. Jan. 12, and nurses at Montefiore and NewYork-Presbyterian will strike at 7 a.m. The nurses seek improvements in workplace safety and staffing standards; wages remain negotiable. Hagans reported limited progress at the bargaining table and that management missed most of a Jan. 10 bargaining meeting. Several other private hospitals have reached tentative agreements, including some Northwell sites.
