Officer killed after a gunman took hostages at a Pennsylvania hospital
Briefly

In a tragic incident on Saturday at UPMC Memorial Hospital, a gunman, Diogenes Archangel-Ortiz, entered the ICU with a pistol and zip ties, taking hostages before a violent confrontation with police ensued. The attack left Officer Andrew Duarte dead and several hospital staff members injured. Witnesses confirmed that Archangel-Ortiz had prior dealings with the ICU, suggesting he deliberately targeted the individuals. Authorities reaffirmed that law enforcement acted within their rights. The community mourns Duarte’s loss as leaders call for resilience against such acts of violence.
This is a huge loss to our community... who were justified in taking their action using deadly force.
It appears Archangel-Ortiz had previous contact... and that he intentionally targeted the workers.
The attack on police and health care workers is unacceptable... we must stand up against such violence.
